In 1993 a small game developer called Cyan published what has been deemed one of the most popular computer games of all times, simply called Myst. Robyn and Rand Miller, the brothers that came up with the concept, probably never imagined in their widest dreams that Myst would become as popular and celebrated as it has. This wasn?t a game that required you to go and kill a gazillion zombies, shoot down your opponents, or had any sort of the arcade-like qualities that was popular at the time. This game actually required you to THINK! With its complex puzzles, surreal visuals and sounds, and intriguing story line, this game begot an entire genre of games similar to itself. Read more
Fable: the Lost Chapters

Fable, released last year for the Xbox, was given heaps of press and hype prior to its release, with TV campaigns and online ads at every turn. Pre-orders quickly sold at every major game supplier, and finding an available copy looked to be almost impossible. That is, until the next morning when several became available from people who traded it in for some pre-scratched DVDs. Apparently it didn?t take long to beat Fable, and game forums soon erupted with cries of anguish and despair. Fable?s creators boasted that Fable would let you live the life of a hero, right in your own living room. What they meant was ?we will allow you to play the 10 hour segment of Fable that we have finished thus far. We?re going to go ahead and charge you the price of a full-sized game, because we spent so much on advertising this year and we need to take care of some bills. But don?t worry, the game will be finished some time next year and can be purchased…with more money.? Read more

How many of you remember one of the first RTS games to come out in the PC market? Westwood Studios came out with Dune II in 1992 and it was an instant hit. Why it was called Dune II and not Dune still escapes me though. It was highly successful and started the RTS revolution. It was complex, because you had to micro manage your troops on top of having to mine Spice on the desert planet Arakis. You had to construct buildings and you had a technology tree that showed the progression you went through to build items and upgrades. And all of you were rubbing your temples saying to yourself ?My God! How am I going to control all of this stuff going on. Can?t we just take turns, please?!? Read more

What is it about a first person shooter that makes it wonderful? Is it an intricate story complete with plot twists and mysterious characters? Is it cinematic gameplay with high poly models and stunning cutscenes? The shiny box art? Here at PTD these things are usually hoisted high into the air and praised with cries of happiness. But, huddled at a monitor deep in my study, I?ve stumbled upon a revelation. Gibs. Gibs are the most loved bits of gaming in my heart. Small chunks of skull and spleen smattered with blood explode into the air as if to say ?William…you stud muffin you.? You keep your fancy-pants physics engine Valve! Keep your stunning new graphics engine ID! You cram it up your cram holes I say! Give me gibs or give me death! Read more
