Of course, Brain Age was not created to be a game, but a brain trainer program. Lost Magic

The Nintendo DS is quickly becoming synonymous with the word innovation. Lost Magic, Taito’s latest effort, continues the trend. Lost Magic is a successful and unique real-time strategy role-playing game. Unfortunately, the game does not have enough RTS elements to please the hardcore strategy fans, nor does it have enough RPG mechanics to please all of the hardcore RPG players who are always looking for the “next Final Fantasy.” Read more

Splinter Cell Essentials

Since Splinter Cell games have been developed on virtually every platform, you can imagine my delight when the PSP version was released. The PSP is far superior than the Gameboy DS in terms of technology and features, but lacks a library of games. Like many games, Splinter Cell Essentials show promise at first, but loses steam. Kingdom Hearts 2

July 14, 2006 by PTD Contributor · Leave a Comment

Way back in 2002, Square Enix released Kingdom Hearts, an action RPG that combined elements of their smash hit Final Fantasy franchise with the gameplay of Brave Fencer Musashi and the dubious addition of various characters and scenarios from Disney animated films. This brutal concoction sounds like a fan-fiction writer’s wet dream, yet the final game resulted in one of the best PS2 titles to date with just a few nagging flaws. Its recent sequel, Kingdom Hearts 2, fixes most of the problems the original had, making the game a must own for RPG fans, Disney enthusiasts, and anime junkies. Read more

Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers

July 12, 2006 by PK Hufford · Leave a Comment

When Full Spectrum Warrior first came out, it revolutionized the tactical simulation genre. Working in conjunction with the United States Army to develop a training simulation in the area of MOUT (Military Operations on Urban Terrain), Pandemic Studios highlighted the extreme dangers of combat in densely populated urban areas. As a crazed fanatic of these types of games, I excitedly jumped at the opportunity to play the sequel. Read more

Game Tycoon

Robert Altman opens his intricate ensemble film, The Player, in an audacious way. It’s witty, self-referential, and utterly bewildering. The camera winds and wends its way through a Hollywood back lot, picking up snippets of conversation. The shot lasts 8 minutes, without a single cut. The camera keeps returning to a studio executive’s office window, where you can hear producers being asked to pitch their movie “in 25 words or less.” Self-referential material like this is difficult to pull off well. If you manage it, you’re a genius, but if you don’t, you just look self-absorbed. Read more
