While most role-playing games limit the player to a tiny pool of playable characters, a paltry three of which can be fielded at any one time, the heart of Suikoden games has always been gathering together the 108 Stars of Destiny. Not only are most of the Stars fully functional combatants, but you can even use six of them at once in battle! Another unusual aspect of these games is that they all take place in the same world, most of them within the span of a few decades, thus allowing for a great degree of crossover between characters, locations, and plot elements. With each successive entry in the series, rather than simply experiencing a number of disparate stories, fans have also seen bits and pieces of a greater narrative slowly come together. Read more

Teen Titans

It seems that the majority of TV and movie game tie-ins fail to deliver any spark of originality or even much of a passing nod to what makes the source material so interesting to fans in the first place. Unfortunately Teen Titans succumbs to the almost inevitable disappointing display gamers have come to expect, casting aside colorful characters and compelling story and throwing us in the mire of repetitive play and uninspired design. The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code is a bit of a worldwide phenomenon, isn?t it? Not only has it sold umpteen million copies in book form - presumably including that daft portion of society that refuses to regularly read - but now finds itself transferred into film form, staring Tom ?Life?s like a box of chocolates? Hanks, and Audrey ?What a gorgeous woman she is? Tautou. Read more

If you, like me, haven?t found an action-RPG that compares to Diablo since… er, Diablo II, then I?ve got some good news for you: feel free to uninstall D2, because finally, a hack ?n slash game has emerged to challenge the six-year reigning champion of mindless click-fests. A challenge, yes, and a victory over the champ. Read more

Urban Chaos

The FPS (that?s first person shooter to all of us) genre is easily one of the most crowded. While some games use better graphics as the selling point, Urban Chaos: Riot Response provides a new setting where the player actually helps the police and other emergency response workers. Urban Chaos is not a perfect game, it will not completely reinvent the FPS genre, nor will it become the ?next Halo?. Despite that, Urban Chaos is a seriously fun time that can be enjoyed by all shooter fans. Read more

Deadly Rooms of Death

Take one part Sokoban, stir in two parts Chip?s Challenge, and add just the tiniest dash of the old Unix game Robots (for flavor), and you have a concoction approximating Caravel Games? flagship title, Deadly Rooms of Death, or DROD for short. DROD is a puzzle game where you assume the role of Beethro, a Smitemaster, who cleans out dungeons using nothing more than his sword and his wits. Read more

X-Men: The Official Game

This is how you should do it, this is a nice way to use a film license. Connect it to the movie storyline, but don?t try to recreate the movie ? why hasn?t that become industry standard? Activision has sure played this one right, because the game will not only appeal to diehard X-Men fans, but also to people who enjoyed X-Men 3: The Last Stand, since X-Men: The Official Game gives you background to the motion picture. It?s a nice display of crossbreeding in the entertainment industry. Read more

Rise of Legends

September 7, 2006 by PTD Contributor · Leave a Comment

Many gamers are ready for the end of the RTS (that?s short for real-time strategy, folks) genre. Frankly, we don?t care what those gamers think as long as future waves are as impressive as Rise of Legends. The easiest way to describe the game is that it?s like the French Revolution ? all in the execution. There?s nothing wildly different or original here, but the finesse with which it?s all implemented is the key factor. From the overall structure of the three singleplayer campaigns to elements as minor as the quality tooltips, Big Huge Games has crafted one very sleek real-time experience. Read more
