Japan gets new … uh … PS2s?

Following hot on the heels of cheaper PS3 SKUs, Sony has plans to step up the next-gen console battle with a retooled PS2 launch later this month. That’s no typo, either. We’re talking Ps2s.

Sony announced plans to release a lighter PS2 in three new colors to our fellow gamers in Japan, announcing that the new units will be lighter thanks to a “completely overhauled” architecture. Aside from being a little lighter in the loafers, these new PS2s won’t be touting any additional features that the current PS2 won’t have.

While we appreciate a good redesign as much as the next bloke, it seems it would be nicer if Sony would pour some R&D into making the behemoth PS3 lighter. Come on, Sony. Do the rabid PlayStation fans on your island nation really clamor for an internal AC adapter, or have we lost touch with the fanbase?
