60GB Sony PS3 gone after July
by Patrick Hufford on July 13, 2007
Just when you thought Sony was getting it, they decide to stab consumers in the eye! In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, SCEA president David Reeves mentions that the reason for the $100 price was to move the 60GB PS3 inventory, and when they’re gone, they’re gone! This will leave only the $599 80GB PS3 with Motorstorm available in the US. Thanks a bunch Sony!
Happy Friday the 13th!
UPDATE - It appears that Sony is doing some back pedaling now. They claim that inventory levels of the 60GB model will make it available for several months. From what I can see, if Sony continues to bungle how they are handling this bait and switch job, they may not actually get to sell of their inventory as consumers will decide that $250 for a Wii is the better value.
UPDATE - So the confusion continues, or in this case clears things up. Engadget has a report that the 60GB PS3 will in fact be available, even when current inventories run out. This seemed to have stemmed from some confusion about a comment from Sony’s European head mentioning that if the 60GB PS3 were cut, that inventories would only last through July as the PS3. So run out and purchase your Wii…err…PS3 now.
UPDATE - ::SIGH:: Just when I thought this was put to rest, Sony decided to jab me in my remaining good eye. From our friends at Joystiq, here’s Sony’s official statement on the 60GB PS3; “The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.” In other words, we have no clue, so we’re not tellin’ ya!

Not to mention a PS3 that is less backward compatible than it’s predecessors! I’m not sure what’s going on, but now we’re back to a $600 dollar price point — this time with no other options.
Maybe the Sony guys are planning on shorting their own stock for Christmas.
