The general consensus is that levels 1 through 20 were press ready and though slightly buggy are great graphically and sound wise. Somewhere there after, things take a turn for the, well, worse, for lack of a better word. All that out on the table, is Age of Conan a grand scale flop, even though its sales are reigning number one and holding steady? Absolutely not!
All games have kinks. Bear with it, hold the course and let them work through the worst. This is a MMORG after all, the rumor mill is going to run like a hamster on acid and then all will work like a charm and be forgiven and forgotten. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will this game be work out its nuances without gamers helping out by playing it and making it a success. Go on, back to your game!
What will happen when special effects aren’t special anymore? [Vertical]
June 30, 2008 by William Stapleton · Leave a Comment
My son and I went to see The Hulk when the new Marvel Studio film opened in Oklahoma City recently, and we were both impressed with the seamless nature of the CGI elements in the movie. As we drove away from the theater, we started talking about how filming technology has evolved, making films like The Hulk and Ironman possible. I told him about the ‘gee-whiz’ feeling I had when I saw Star Wars for the first time in a little movie theater in Sugarland, Texas back in the late 70s, and we started brainstorming about the future of film. Soon, popular stars will develop that are completely created - that is, their voices and features will be entirely generated by computers. With the inevitable improvements occurring in CGI, soon movie-goers won’t be able to tell the difference between live actors and computer-generated characters. And suddenly, we’ll have ‘actors’ who can look the same for literally hundreds of years. Imagine a storyline that spans a couple of centuries - or even a millennium - it could happen.
But what happens when the ‘gee-whiz’ wears off? My grandchildren will take CGI technology for granted, because they’ll grow up in a time when it’s the norm, instead of something that’s new and exciting. I’ll admit, I’ve gone to a few films where the only redeeming quality was the power of its special effects. But what will happen when special effects aren’t ’special’ anymore?
That’s easy - writing will become more important again. The story will become more critical to the success of a film than its visuals. Hollywood comes full circle.
Just think about the ‘website craze’ when the Internet was relatively new to public use. A million sites sprang up that had plenty of flash - but no real content. Predictably, those content-poor websites withered on the vine, and justly so. As the World Wide Web has become more mature, the emphasis has shifted away from sites with scrolling marquees to sites that are content-rich. Only the strong survive.
The same thing will happen in film. Great CGI effects won’t be enough to keep an audience’s attention. In fact today, the best movie is the one with both: great special effects and a great storyline. Marvel’s Spider-man franchise is a good example.
So, I’m excited about the future of film. As a person who would rather read a well-written book than see a poorly-written movie, I’ll welcome the soon-to-appear improvement in scripts and dialogue.
And besides, with all this new CGI wizardry, maybe someone will be brave enough to make a movie of the Foundation Trilogy. You could stretch that excellent storyline over a couple of centuries!

DotEmu revolutionizes Classic Gaming
June 30, 2008 by ibaker · Leave a Comment
Anyone who’s anyone in the gaming community has played their favorite classic games via an emulator. The fact of the matter is the originals you bought are stuck so far in the back of the attic that it is impossible to play them for fear of blowing up your antique, scratch that, beloved well aged console. Or for the extremely avid gamer, so worn out that the disks have burn mask in them. Don’t worry, I was far away from all the vintage consoles that abide in my house when I dared to utter those words.
DotEmu has been observant of the feeming need of gamers to play their classic games and thus embarked on the classic quest to save the empire, I mean games. Beginning this process, naturally, meant acquiring licenses and committing to making software that is an exact replica of the original, though enhanced features are an option. With the desire to rejuvenate our age old friends and update their look, DotEmu has brought BitRabbit aboard to speed up the process.
Using the RabbitFactory Technology you should be able to be gaming by phone with outstanding graphics as fast as they can pump out the games. The art is stunning and the imagery change over is virtually flawless, making classic gaming modernized almost better than the original. A few of the games that are already ported are Krypton EGG, Nicky Boom, Nicky Boom 2, Down Hill Challenge, Grand prix 500, and Grand prix 500 2. Games will be available on the web, PC, and/or mobile.
As I said before, I promise, I am very far away from any vintage consoles, unless they have been hacked to have much updated motherboards and processors, they cannot hear a word uttered here. So, grab your phones, and get ready for the newest releases that are set to come out this summer.

Si tu parle français tu connais deja que le Diablo III es venu! Dig deep into the recesses of your game vault and grab your grime covered duo to brush up on your history of Deckard Cain and the ruins of Tristram’s Cathedral. Blizzard Entertainment’s Worldwide Invitational didn’t just grace Paris with it’s finest, it blessed the world with an introduction to Diablo III. This long awaited follow-up to Diablo 2 has already garnered over 10,000 hits on the forums in less than few hours.
Paris has been taken by storm and everyone is in a whirlwind about the upcoming storyline. Many are asking will the new release be on CD and will it be solely on the PC or will it be consoles as well. The news is so recent that mum is still the word. However, “I love you,” seems to be rampant on the lips of many the avid gamer and Diablo fan.
The official release date is not announced and yet the mere trailers and thought of battling evil and assisting the heroes of Sanctuary once more is enough to suffice for the masses. Blizzard promises to keep to the tried and true while mixing it up with new and exciting features, classes and even pets. So much time spent trying out other games and waiting on this successor to its ancestors will only prove to be profitable in increasing the entertainment value. Thank you, Blizzard, for knowing how to truly keep a game enjoyable, instead of spamming us with over inundated sequels.

For a company established by a pitcher, 38 sure knows how to catch!

38 Studios has reached up into the galaxy and plucked Thom Ang from the stars to add to their dish of talent. Ang will be filling the role of Director of Art for the company that is developing a MMPOG codenamed Copernicus. Rubbing shoulders daily with the likes of R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane might in itself be considered a reward.
With a powerhouse team like this, 38 Studios is steamrolling along. Thom Ang comes to 38 sporting 15 years of experience with a resume that features such names as THQ, EA, as well as TV storyboards such as, The X-Files, Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, and Max Steel.
For a start up company this is a great coup and we expect to see spectacular things to keep out fingers amused with in the coming years. For those interested in the evolution of MMOG’s this is the company to keep your eye on.

For the first time ever, Blizzard Entertainment is taking their Invitational to Paris. The 2008 Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational will be speckled with Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain rock entertainment, gaming, contests, Q&A panels, tournaments, and more. Featured, naturally, will be Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft game universes as well as the skills of top leader eSports players around the world.
Speaking of World of Warcraft, Blizzard will be using the Invitational to showcase their waterproof Blizzard Authenticator. The Authenticator is an electronic device designed to be attached to a key chain. Generating a six-digit security code, valid once for a short period of time, it must be provided along with the account name and password when signing in to the World of Warcraft account linked to it.
The purpose is to prevent unauthorized access to accounts, by description it would appear that the device might be similar, or maybe inspired by, to an RSA SecureID device, without stripping your wallet bare. This gadget will be available at the Invitational and shortly after on European websites for €6.00. It’s guaranteed now that no one will be able to fake being Leeroy Jenkins.
