Wii Play

May 2, 2007 by weverett · 3 Comments

Where do I begin? Lets start off by looking at it strictly from a monetary viewpoint. $49.99 isn’t really a high price for a new game now-a-days (sad isn’t it?). Especially when it comes with a Wiimote, which aside from being hard to acquire sometimes, is always nice to have an extra. Monetarily I would say that Wii Play is a good buy. However FUNetarily (yes I said it) I would have to disagree. Read more

Final Fantasy III

January 31, 2007 by weverett · Leave a Comment

It seems every time I turn around there is a new Final Fantasy title on the shelves. This isn’t a problem mind you, I’m just remarking. It is however a bit intimidating. I hardly finish playing and reviewing the newest Final Fantasy and without a moment to spare for a catnap or a quiet walk through the woods, I find myself standing in line for the newest copy. Metal Gear Ac!d was the most hyped release title for the PSP last quarter and MG fans couldn’t have been happier. The first of the series to be above-view and card based, MGA was a huge success. Well one good turn deserves another, and now we see the release of Metal Gear Ac!d 2. Read more

The Godfather

It’s 1945. New York City is in chaos with rival families fighting for control. The sounds of fists hitting flesh and the steady thudding of tommy guns are part of everyday life for New York City’s inhabitants. Peaceful family picnics were interrupted by a drive by shooting, their lasagna hitting the ground as guns start to blaze. Crossing the wrong person could leave you dead and bloodied in your basement. Powerful men were calling the shots and their words are not to be taken lightly. The Corleone family needs your help. The Godfather himself is calling on you to help the family overthrow NYC.  Kill, steal, pillage, yes, but whatever you do, don’t cross the Godfather. Read more

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams

What is it that makes a game great? Don’t tell me about the graphics or the fancy lens flares please. I don’t want to hear about your “HDR” lighting and your rag doll physics. I want to hear a magnificent story of glory, honor, and big shiny swords. I want addictive gameplay and an enthralling story, nothing more, nothing less. Too often developers focus on making their hero accurately reflect the world around them in their glassy eyes or react to the world around them so much so that there is no time left to tell the hero why the crap he is even there. So what if you can see monsters creeping up behind him from the reflection on his sword! Why is he there? Why does the monster even want to feast on him? Stories people, stories. Graphics are impressive, but they will quickly fade next to the new generation of visuals. Tell the people a good story and they will love you for it. On that note I would like to applaud Capcom for their latest masterpiece. Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (DoD) is not only an incredible story, but the gameplay is fun and addictive. Read more

BLACK

April 20, 2006 by weverett · Leave a Comment

BLACK reminds me of every other first-person shooter I’ve ever played. It has guns and the guns need ammo. It has a sniper rifle. It has health packs. It has silencers. It has grenades. It even has a soundtrack! This game has everything that a gamer could ever ask for from a run-of-the-mill shooter, but that’s alright because the rest of the game is incredible! (For those of you who are confused, you’re supposed to be reading this with a sarcastic undertone.) Read more

GUN

When Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater hit stores in 1999 for the PlayStation 2, Neversoft became the authority in the extreme sports genre. Seeing the great success that the Tony Hawk name had brought them, they soon began development of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, and then 3, and then 4, and so on. Five years and seven games later, we arrive in 2005 with the release of Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland. Having a firm hold on the extreme sports crowd, Neversoft set their eye on another genre. Shooters. At E3 2005, Neversoft and Activision showcased their two latest masterpieces, one of which was American Wasteland. The other was GUN. You would assume that Neversoft was taking Tony Hawk to the obvious next level…skateboarding with guns, right? Start with a 380-kickflip, go into an indy nosegrind, into a 1280 reverse nollie, into a massive gunfight, right? While the idea excites me, Neversoft is taking their latest game in a completely different direction. Read more

Dead or Alive 4

Fighters…some people consider fighting games to be the lowest form of gaming ever imaginable. Mindless, dribbling, button-mashing, time wasters with no story and repetitive gameplay. Those people are stupid. Those people have never experienced the joyous occasion that is standing in line at the local arcade, waiting to challenge the reigning Street Fighter II champion. While those days are distant memories, you can still beat the gibs out of your friends for a price. You may have grown up, but the genre has grown with you equally. There is more to do than just punch and kick, and the smart player will almost always beat the button masher. Fighting games of today take good reaction speed, timing, strategy, and above all, plenty of friends to send home crying for their mommies. Read more

Fable: the Lost Chapters

February 3, 2006 by weverett · Leave a Comment

Fable, released last year for the Xbox, was given heaps of press and hype prior to its release, with TV campaigns and online ads at every turn. Pre-orders quickly sold at every major game supplier, and finding an available copy looked to be almost impossible. That is, until the next morning when several became available from people who traded it in for some pre-scratched DVDs. Apparently it didn’t take long to beat Fable, and game forums soon erupted with cries of anguish and despair. Fable’s creators boasted that Fable would let you live the life of a hero, right in your own living room. What they meant was “we will allow you to play the 10 hour segment of Fable that we have finished thus far. We’re going to go ahead and charge you the price of a full-sized game, because we spent so much on advertising this year and we need to take care of some bills. But don’t worry, the game will be finished some time next year and can be purchased…with more money.” Read more
