Call of Duty 2

So, try to imagine this situation. The year is 1944. You’re 20 years old and have been training for the invasion of Fortress Europe for almost two years. And the duty your battalion gets assigned? Storming the beaches of Normandy at a small section of cliffs known as Pointe du Hoc, where your mission is to climb up those cliffs and take out the coastal batteries that could wreak havoc on Allied forces landing on Omaha and Utah beach. Oh, did we mention that the cliffs are heavily defended and you’ll be completely exposed to enemy fire? And that there stands a good chance that about eighty percent of your team are going to be wounded or killed? Sounds great! By the way, you’ll have to hold that position from expected massive German counterattack as well until other Allied troops can link up to you. Are you up to the task? Read more

A decade after you saved the kingdom of Ehb from the hands of evil (If you beat the original Dungeon Siege), a new power rises and threatens the land of Aranna once again. This time around, Gas Powered Games (GPG) has revamped the whole title with a beautiful new graphics engine and wonderfully cinematic gameplay. In Dungeon Siege II, the sequel to the best selling RPG from GPG, you’re once again called to take up arms against evil and save the kingdom of Aranna from certain doom. Read more
World of Warcraft

I was introduced to massively multiplayer online games (MMOG) when my son plugged an Internet adapter into the back of his PS2. Soon, he was deeply involved in a game called Everquest, so I created a character of my own - and was hooked. I advanced to Everquest for PC, then waited like everyone else for Sony’s release of Everquest II. While my EQ paladin was killing gnolls in Blackburrow, I heard about a game called Worlds of Warcraft (WoW) and found out that many of the EQ players were just killing time before the next release. I’d never heard of Worlds of Warcraft (I’m 48 years old and wasn’t in the groove), but I doubted it could be as good as Everquest II. Read more
Fianl Fantasy XI

Ah Final Fantasy…Memories of the strangely overpowered red mage lobbing fireballs at unsuspecting slimes flood the mind. Several years and several enumerations later, we find ourselves at Final Fantasy XI (FFXI). It even comes with an expansion pack: Rise of the Zilart! It’s a two for one deal! Two reviews for the price of … well none. You know nothing goes better with Final Fantasy than a large pepperoni pizza and a few BAWLS energy drinks. Read more
Guild Wars

I came into Guild Wars hearing good things from my friends, and was excited to try it out. I am heavily into the World of Warcraft endgame raiding scene, and was likewise into the Everquest raiding content — I hoped that Guild Wars would be an interesting departure from the standard raiding drudgery and endgame grind. What follows are my impressions of the game after playing it on and off for about 2 weeks. Read more

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), a company most know for bringing us the Everquest series back in 1999, has steadily been expanding its presence in the gaming industry since then. With three MMOGs under their belt, two sporting the Everquest name and the other being Star Wars Galaxies, it seems SOE has decided to direct their attention to a new class of gamer. Read more
The Matrix Online

The Matrix series has brought to the masses one of those rare moments in Pop Culture that just about every walk of life can relate to these days. What the Wachowski Brothers have achieved is one of the most recognized sci-fi franchises in the planet; right up there with Star War and Star Trek, taking a various loose interpretation of this thing we call the Internet, which now in a “connected” society we would shudder to think about life without it, and weaving a conspiracy theory so vast and brilliant you did actually have to ask yourself the question “What if..?” Are humans the captains of their own destiny, or are we pawns of some higher power or intelligence with our destinies predetermined down to our each and every action. Is the reality that each of us faces every day truly what we perceive, or has the human species already achieved the The Singularity and we’re just puppets of Skynet? Or perhaps Flying Spaghetti Monster has blessed us with his Noodly Appendage? Read more

A couple of years ago, I was playing Trade Wars (TW) on an ANSI BBS that I had stumbled across. Much to my delight, BBS’s had survived the Internet age via a simple evolution: Telnet. Read more
Dark Age of Camelot

Fantasy MMOGs are a dime a dozen these days — you can’t trip without landing on one! Toss in a few elves, some quests, an abundance of magic and face stabbing and you’ve got yourself a standard fantasy MMOG! Though, not all of them stop there. Dark Age of Camelot or DAoC is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game released by Mythic Entertainment way back in October, 2001. What was then a nameless company, Mythic has turned itself into one of the big name MMOG developers known for offering free expansions for their subscribers and actually listening to them regarding changes (something most gamers will tell you isn’t common practice)! To be quite honest, when I saw the Lucas Arts logo on yet another game box I was skeptical. Considering titles like Jedi Academy and the steaming poopy that is Battle of Naboo, who can blame me? However, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed RC all the way to the end. It ranks right up there with Grim Fandango and the original Jedi Knight in my humble (yet always correct) opinion.
