Urban Dead

If you’ve been reading PTD Magazine for a while, you’ve probably picked up on the fact that we like zombies. We like zombie games, zombie movies and even an occasional zombie outbreak. Because of this fervor, it was hard to contain our excitement when the web-based Urban Dead came up for review. Most of us had been playing it on and off for a few years, and it definitely holds a special place in our rotting, worm eaten hearts.
Urban Dead is a HTML based game that pits players versus players for a battle of survival in quarantined city of Malton. The game is extremely easy to begin. It only requires a valid email address (which we’ve never been spammed on) and a choice of which two sides you would like to start out playing. You can either play a human character and defend the remains of your now-crumbling town, or you can play as a zombie, and go about eating humans. Either path has plenty of game time, and both types will lead players through experience gathering and levelling to increase your abilities.
The game is turned based, and you only have 50 turns to play in a day. With each turn you can explore the city (represented by a 3×3 html grid), attack other players, barricade yourself in a building, or find any number of other post-apocalyptic activities to keep you occupied. As you gain experience points you’ll be able to spend them on a number of real-life abilities such as body building, radio operation and shopping. After all, every survivalist knows that a keen sense of shopping could literally save your life.
Urban Dead is a quirky, zombie infused game with a simple interface that is a joy to click through. If you’ve been looking for something to fill the time between your meetings, or even something to do while you’re in said meetings, Urban Dead is for you. I’m playing John Jacob Harrison (http://www.urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=834631), former NecroTech engineer, current shambling, rotting, brain-eating dead dude.
I love the game, and played a long while back, but now I’m working with this new character. If anyone feels like starting a PTD group, announce it here.
I actually met Kevan online once, and we chatted for an hour or so. He’s a really cool guy, with some genius ideas. Let’s hope he brings them to fruition with the same quality we’ve seen in Urban Dead.
Awesome! We should definitely get a group going.
Do you remember Barren Realms Elite in the BBS era? I’ve been playing a HTML version of that for the last month or so. I would love to get a group going there as well.
BBS was before my time, though I have played a few door games before. Never played Barren Realms Elite. What’s the URL? I wouldn’t mind checking it out.
Also on this topic, have you ever played TradeWars?
The URL is … http://www.newkingdoms.com — I’m currently playing the Flux game, but it’s due to wrap up on the 5th of next month.
TradeWars! Now you’re speaking my language! During my tenure with AOL, we had a game being served in one of the datacenters. It was a blast! Do you have a favorite server?
