MGS4 开始几年在事件以后 MGS2, and the years have not been kind to Snake.  Due to genetic mutations caused by the FOXDIE virus, he’s aging rapidly, and the world has gone to Hell in a hand basket.  Soldiers and mercenaries are now all enhanced and controlled by nanotechnology, weapons are now ID-locked to ensure that only the weapon’s owner can use them, and small proxy wars for profit are being fought all over the world.  Snake’s arch nemesis, Liquid Ocelot, has amassed an army of PMCs (Private Military Companies), and he’s planning global insurrection.

You (Snake) are asked to go on one last mission to terminate Liquid.  Along the way you’ll be reunited with old allies and enemies and confront new and deadlier foes.  I can’t get into too much detail about the plot which is long and complicated.  You’ve probably heard some people complaining about the many cut-scenes you have to sit through.  The storytelling can be a bit heavy handed, and some of the humor can be crude, but overall the cut-scenes and the actual gameplay are so tightly integrated that you don’t want to skip them the first time you play the game.

A huge arsenal of weapons and modifications become available throughout the game, such as different sights, genade launchers, or silencers.  Most of the weapons you’ll acquire from dispatched enemies, but some you acquire though a mysterious “gun launderer” called Drebin 893, who can unlock ID-locked weapons.  Spare weapons collected from fallen enemies earn you Drebin points which you use to make your purchases.

The beauty of MGS4 is that you’re not limited to one style of play.  Unlike previous MGS games, which stressed the use of stealth, you can run-and-gun through the game if you choose. You can also complete the entire game using non-lethal techniques if you are hard-core. Any way you play will involve you in some huge set piece battles that will make you feel like you’re in a Hollywood action flick.  The boss fights you’ll experience, especially the Beauty and the Beasts, will simply blow you away.

Another new feature is your OctoCamo suit.  Instead of constantly going to a selection menu to change your camoflage, the OctoCamo suit automatically adapts to your surroundings.  Your other major tool is the Solid Eye, an enhanced tactical HUD that gives you night vision, a radar-like threat indicator, and other tactical information.  Also at your disposal is the Metal Gear Mk. II, a mini-robot controlled by Otacon.  You can control the Mk. II to scout areas out, or stun enemies with a well placed electrical shock.

On top of your typical health level, you’ll need to monitor Snake’s psyche and stress levels.  Snake gets stressed out by being in unfavorable conditions, such as being in the cold or being exposed in the open. As your stress level increases, your pysche level drops, which in turn impacts Snake’s combat abilities, such as regenerating health, aiming, or running for cover.  You can also get into “the zone,” or a combat high, when you’re operating at maximum efficiency.  But as soon as the high is gone, you hit bottom pretty quickly, and it usually results in Snake heaving his guts out.  Generally speaking, this doesn’t come into play too often, and there are plenty of items available to get his stress levels down.  You can tell when Snake is stressed, as you’ll hear him moan or start rubbing his back.

The cherry on top is Metal Gear Online, featuring 16-player online battles with standard Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes as well as a sneaking mode, base conquering missions, and a rescue mode.  I haven’t had a chance to try everything out yet, as I’m playing through the game again for a third time.

It’s impossible to discuss every aspect of this game in the space that I’ve been allotted.  I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface.  The bottom line is that if you own a Playstation 3, you should own this game.  It’s an experience unlike any other in console video gaming.
