Neues Herausforderer-Nähern: Birdo
11. Juni 2007 vorbei Wil
Come to think of it, that’s a darned good reason for Birdo to be included: he must have made at least a few enemies with his gimmicks. If popularity and general annoyance weren’t convincing enough, we have a sneaking suspicion it was Birdo who started all the fighting to begin with…an unusual love Triangle between he, Yoshi, and Captain Falcon…hmmm. Ignorance is bliss in this situation.
All jokes aside, let’s take a look at the attacks we know Birdo’s capable of. When looking at smash attacks, Birdo doesn’t really have much to be unique with unless he fancies beating other characters down with his bow. Besides the items he could pull from various sports games such as a golf club and tennis racket, all Birdo really has for clobbering his opponents with are his own hands (that diamond ring he carries could make someone holey), feet, tail, and noggin, and maybe the cleats used in Mario Strikers. Those could make for some interesting aerial strikes. The answer we’re looking for, however, is really the only attack Birdo has ever displayed - firing an egg from his mouth. This would reasonably make for an excellent and easy normal attack much like Mario’s fireballs, only taking on a straight course across the stage. To stay in consistent with his appearance in Melee, the eggs should probably stop someone in their tracks, perhaps even knocking them back a little. That said, this ability might bring bad news for edge-hangers trying to get back on the stage. Some might note that different coloured Birdos fire different projectiles. While eggs are a nice base object, it’d be interesting for Birdo to spit out the odd fireball from time to time.
Other special attacks would have to be invented just for Birdo as there’s nothing really too special about him or his abilities. However, Birdo has a certain orifice that’s been quite unexplored. To put it euphemistically, it’s probably dark, dank, and full of mucus. It’s not too nice on the brain to think of, but Birdo’s mouth is a prime candidate for executing throws, bringing an opponent in, scaring them for life, and tossing them out. Who really knows what’s in there? A tongue? Teeth? A sickly bulging, bubbling broth of blubbery boogers? Imagine if that last hypothesis were valid; Birdo could let some of that loose on an opponent or even on the field making it slippery yet thick. A grotesque squelch would only sweeten the deal. Perhaps a less vomit-inducing attack would be preferred; a vortex of air would be just as effective at taking even Ganondorf off his feet.
It’s true that Birdo may not be on many peoples’ minds when they think of who they’d like to see enter the fray in Brawl, but that doesn’t mean our cross-dressing buddy doesn’t have what it takes. In order to make Birdo a worthwhile character, Sakurai’s development team would have to put forth a fair bit of creativity in order to get the most out of a hollow but popular character. That’s really not a bad thing though; none can really argue against exploring a character further and using them in different ways than they have previously been portrayed. It’s happened before. Link’s aerial ’sword plant’ first featured in the original Smash Bros has been carried over to Soul Calibur II and even The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
