Blizzard Invitational storms Paris, Authenticators only accessible to participants
June 26, 2008 by ibaker · 7 Comments
For the first time ever, Blizzard Entertainment is taking their Invitational to Paris. The 2008 Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational will be speckled with Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain rock entertainment, gaming, contests, Q&A panels, tournaments, and more. Featured, naturally, will be Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft game universes as well as the skills of top leader eSports players around the world.
Speaking of World of Warcraft, Blizzard will be using the Invitational to showcase their waterproof Blizzard Authenticator. The Authenticator is an electronic device designed to be attached to a key chain. Generating a six-digit security code, valid once for a short period of time, it must be provided along with the account name and password when signing in to the World of Warcraft account linked to it.
The purpose is to prevent unauthorized access to accounts, by description it would appear that the device might be similar, or maybe inspired by, to an RSA SecureID device, without stripping your wallet bare. This gadget will be available at the Invitational and shortly after on European websites for €6.00. It’s guaranteed now that no one will be able to fake being Leeroy Jenkins.
